The ancient town is an exceptionally well-preserved example of a SE Asian trading port dating back to the 15th-19th centuries. At the time it was a convenient stopover for international merchants from China, Japan and India, hence its colourful cultural mix of history and architecture.  In 1999, UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage Site. Travel & Leisure Magazine has ranked the town number seven of the world’s top 15 best cities
